Engage, Learn, and Have Fun with "Reading with Rella B" – The Ultimate Kids Literacy Podcast

Welcome to another fun-packed episode of "Reading with Rella B!" If you’re a fan of engaging storytelling, interactive activities, and a touch of physical fun, you’re in the right place. In this episode, we've got a special guest lined up to share an original story, along with delightful activities planned to keep our brains and bodies energized. Let’s dive right into this adventure!

Getting Our Bodies Ready for a Fun Adventure

Before we immerse ourselves in the enchanting world of stories, it’s essential to prepare our bodies for the journey ahead. Rella B kicks off the session with some light, fun exercises to get everyone in the right frame of mind.

Stretching Exercises

Start by reaching your arms out as wide as possible, being mindful of your surroundings. Feel the stretch and imagine you’re trying to touch the farthest thing within your reach. Then, stretch your arms above your head as if you’re reaching for the sky.

Next, extend your arms in front of you and alternate them as if you're tapping an invisible spot a bit out of reach. This works like a gentle shoulder exercise. After that, it’s time for some head tapping—tap the top of your head, then around to the back, the front, your ears, your neck, and finally, your shoulders. Feel the tension melt away.

Balancing and Twisting

Now, let’s give your legs some attention. If you're standing, balance on one leg and rotate your ankle. Switch to the other leg and repeat. If you’re sitting, rotate both ankles simultaneously. Wrapping up, shake out your fingers and toes, and if you can, bend down to touch your toes. Finish with a good shake of your whole body, getting all the wiggles out.

Rella’s Riddle: Let’s Test Our Brains!

With our bodies warmed up, it’s time to engage our minds with Rella’s Riddle. This brain-teasing activity adds a splash of mystery and fun to the session.

Today’s Riddle

Rella B offers three clues to solve the riddle:

  1. A place where plants and flowers grow.
  2. People spend time there tending to their green friends.
  3. It can be found in the backyard or on a city rooftop.

Did you guess it? If you said "garden," you’re correct! Rella B then introduces us to a special guest who has a fascinating story about gardens to share.

Meet the Author: Karl and His Book "Grow!"

Our guest author for today is Karl, a gardening enthusiast who has penned a charming book titled "Grow: How We Get Food from Our Garden." Karl’s book layers rich, poetic verses with educational content about gardening, making it both a delightful and informative read for children and adults alike.

Reading the Book

Karl reads from his book, sharing vibrant descriptions and lively verses that describe the process of gardening from start to finish. Here are some of the engaging phrases from the book:

  • "Till and turn, hack and hoe, plow and plant, mulch and mow."
  • "Germinate, prune and trim, sprout and stem, twig and limb."
  • "Blossom, bloom, bud, bow, beet, bark."

The book is not just a collection of tongue-twisters but also a journey through the seasons and the various tasks involved in gardening.

Discovering Plant Parts

As Karl reads, he explains different parts of the plants:

  • Roots and Seeds: The beginning of plant life, where a seed planted in the soil grows roots and a stem.
  • Flowers and Stamens: Flowers that sprout have stamens which produce pollen. Bees gather pollen, helping in plant reproduction.
  • Harvest Time: The rewarding phase where fruits and vegetables are picked and enjoyed.

Interactive Activity: Word Search Fun!

Rella B doesn’t just stop at listening to stories; there’s always an interactive activity to deepen the experience. Today’s activity is a simple yet festive word search puzzle themed around the New Year. Words like "dance," "party," and "fireworks" are hidden within the grid, waiting to be discovered.
